Bandwidth is how much information can travel through a telephone wire, a radio channel, or a computer connection at one time. A fat pipe has more bandwidth; a thin one has less, so a film keeps pausing. In technical talk it starts as the width of a band of frequencies — how wide a slice of the radio spectrum you are using — and from there it became the everyday word for “how much data can this connection carry.” People now stretch it further, especially at work: “I don’t have the bandwidth” can mean “I don’t have enough time or mental energy for that.” That second use is informal office English; it is the same picture as a full wire that cannot take more traffic. Broadband is related in feel but names a kind of fast connection, not the amount itself.
