Baleful describes a look, a voice, or a feeling that is full of anger, hate, or a wish to hurt. A baleful stare is not just sad or tired — it is dark, and it wants something bad for you. You will meet this word in stories and news writing more than in everyday talk. It sounds a little old, the kind of word a book uses when the bad character watches someone across a room. Though actually, the harm is often only in the look: nobody has to lift a hand. The wish is enough. People sometimes mix it up with woeful (very sad). They sit near each other in old English, but baleful is about harm, not tears.
