A bale is a large bundle of something like hay, cotton, or paper, tightly tied or wrapped together so it can be stored or moved easily — you'll often see 'bales of hay' in a farm field. In British English, 'to bale out' means to jump out of an aircraft with a parachute, or to remove water from a boat with a container — this is usually spelled 'bail out' in American English.
