The simple past tense of 'awake' - it means someone stopped sleeping and became conscious. 'He awoke to the sound of rain' means the rain is what caused him to wake up. It sounds a little more literary or old-fashioned than the more common 'woke up' - in daily conversation, 'woke up' is far more usual.
組成a + woke. This comes from the old verb 'awake,' built on the same root as the more common verb 'wake.'
