An awakening is the moment of waking up — either literally from sleep, or, much more commonly, in a figurative sense: suddenly becoming aware of something important that you didn't see clearly before. People talk about 'a spiritual awakening' (suddenly caring deeply about faith or meaning), or 'the awakening of an interest' in something, meaning it started to grow. It usually describes a meaningful, sometimes life-changing shift in understanding, not just an ordinary realization.
