If a start is auspicious, it looks like a good sign that things will go well — an auspicious beginning, an auspicious day, an auspicious debut. It does not promise success; it only says the signs are friendly. The word is quite formal. In ordinary talk people often say a good start or a promising start instead. You hear it around openings, first meetings, New Year, and a shop’s first day. It is the adjective cousin of auspices, from the same old ‘good sign’ idea, but you do not need the phrase under the auspices of to use it.
