An atlas is a book of maps. Many atlases show the whole world; others show one country, one city, or the stars. You use it to see where places are and how the land and sea are shaped.

The neck-bone sense is a picture: the bone bears the globe of the head. The cloth sense is from Arabic ʔaṭlas, satin, and is not this word's origin.
