An atlas is a book of maps. Many atlases show the whole world; others show one country, one city, or the stars. You use it to see where places are and how the land and sea are shaped. The name honours Atlas, a giant in Greek stories who carried the sky. A map-maker called Mercator gave that name to his book of maps, because stories said Atlas knew the heavens and the round earth. Though actually, English lets the same spelling do extra jobs. Atlas is also the giant himself. Doctors call the top bone in your neck the atlas, because it carries your head the way the giant carried the sky. And there is a shiny cloth also called atlas, from an Arabic word for satin — same letters, different family, a look-alike.

From Atlas, the Greek mythological bearer of the heavens; the map sense comes from Mercator's Atlas, named in his honor.

組成From Latin Atlas, from Greek Átlas, the Bearer, from a verb meaning to suffer, endure, bear. The map-book sense comes from Mercator's Atlas, named in honour of that giant. The neck-bone sense is a picture: the bone bears the globe of the head. The cloth sense is from Arabic ʔaṭlas, satin, and is not this word's origin.
