Assyria was an old country in western Asia, along the River , in the land that is now mostly Iraq. Its first great city was Assur. From there its kings built an empire that, at its strongest, stretched from Egypt to the Persian Gulf. That high period was about the 9th to 7th centuries BC — more than two thousand six hundred years ago. People study Assyria for its palaces, its writing on clay tablets, and for how it made war. Though actually, the name is easy to mix with Syria, a different country that still exists today. The two names are old relatives, but they do not mean the same place. When a history book says ‘Assyria’, it means this ancient empire, not modern Syria.
組成English borrowed the name, in a learned way, from Latin Assyria, from Ancient Greek Ἀσσυρία (Assuría), from Akkadian Aššūrāyu, from Aššūr (Assur), the original capital.
