Assyrian means ‘of ’ — its people, its language, or its things. You can say ‘Assyrian kings’, ‘Assyrian art’, or ‘the Assyrian language’. As a noun, an Assyrian is a person from that people. The old language was written in on clay. Though actually, the word is not only a museum label. There are still people who call themselves Assyrian today, many of them Christian, living in Iraq and nearby lands and also far from home. So in a news story, ‘Assyrian’ may mean a living community, not only an ancient empire. Do not mix it with Syrian, which means ‘of modern Syria’.
