An assemblyman is a man who belongs to an assembly — a group of people chosen to make laws, most often for a US state or a city, not for the whole country. In those places the law-making house is called the Assembly, so the men in it are assemblymen. It is an official title, a little old-fashioned. His work is to vote on state or local laws. Though actually, many places now say assembly member, so they do not have to pick man or woman. This is not the school assembly where students stand in a hall; that is a different meaning of assembly.
