Ascending means going upward or increasing, from the verb ascend, meaning to climb or rise. 'Ascending order' means arranged from smallest to largest, or lowest to highest — the opposite of descending order. You'll also hear it about literal climbing, like an ascending path up a mountain, or in music, an ascending scale, where the notes go from lower to higher.
