One way to hold this word: imagine art cut into boxes. One box is painting, one is dance, one is music, one is film, one is writing. Each box holds a different way of turning an idea into something other people can see or hear. A box is an art form; a single picture inside one is not. That is also why people argue about the word — saying video games are an art form is asking for a new box to be opened.
