An archdiocese is the church area governed by an archbishop, not by an ordinary bishop. A diocese is already a church “county”; an archdiocese is the chief one, often centred on a big city, with smaller dioceses around it. You meet the word most in the Catholic Church, and also in other churches that draw the same kind of map. It names the place and the people in it, not the person in charge (that person is the archbishop). People sometimes say archdiocese when they only mean any diocese; strictly it is the archbishop’s own area. The word belongs to church organisation and news about bishops; it is not everyday talk.
組成arch- (“chief, main”) + diocese. Ultimately from Medieval Latin archdiocesis, a variant of archidioecēsis, from archi- (“chief, main”) + Late Latin dioecēsis.
