An archbishop is a priest of very high rank in some Christian churches, especially Catholic and . He is in charge of all the churches in a large area, and other bishops in that area look to him. Though actually, he is not the Pope: in the Catholic Church the Pope sits above archbishops. And not every church uses the title — many Protestant churches do not. In churches a woman can hold the office; in the Catholic Church the office is for men. In the news you will hear “the Archbishop of Canterbury” () or a city’s Catholic archbishop. The arch- means “chief,” so an archbishop is a bishop over other bishops, not a different religion.

From Old English arċebisċop, from Latin archiepiscopus, from Greek archi- 'chief' + episkopos 'overseer'; arch- + bishop.
