From Latin appetitus, from appetere 'to strive after, reach toward' — ad- 'toward' + petere 'to seek'.
這個字經古法語 apetit 回到拉丁文 appetitus，動詞 appetere 是「朝著某物伸過去、去追求」：ad-（朝向）+ petere（尋求）。petere 這個根也藏在 petition（請願）裡。所以 appetite 從一開始講的就不是「食物」，而是「朝某個東西伸出去的那股勁」——食慾只是這股勁最看得見的形式。
