In a court of law, if you are unhappy with a decision and you ask a higher court to look at the case again, you appeal. The person (or company) who does that is the appellant. It is courtroom English, not café English.

The other side is often called the respondent, or in some places the appellee — the one answering the appeal. You may also see appellant used like an adjective on papers: the appellant party, an appellant brief.
