This word is used with law. It describes a court that does not decide if you are guilty for the first time. Instead, an appellate court checks the work of a lower court. If someone loses a case and thinks the judge got it wrong, they can ask an appellate court to look again. You will almost only see this word next to 'court' - an appellate court - or in news about a case going up to a higher court.
