An apologist is someone who tries to explain and defend an idea, a person, or a political system. The word sits in the same family as apology, but an apologist is not “a person who says sorry a lot.” In older church English, an apologist was simply a defender of the faith. Today, though actually, it often feels a little cool or even unkind: “an apologist for the regime” usually means you think that person is making excuses for something others dislike. Newspapers and essays use it; everyday chat uses it less, unless someone wants that sharp edge.
