The antithesis of something is its complete opposite. If someone is the antithesis of a quiet librarian, they might be loud, messy, and always late. You nearly always need of: the antithesis of X. It is a formal word, at home in essays and speeches. In everyday talk, people say “the opposite” or “the last thing you would expect.” Though actually, there is also a school meaning: antithesis as a way of putting two opposite ideas next to each other in a sentence for punch. This entry is the “complete opposite” sense, which grew out of that “placing against” idea. Writers sometimes stretch it for “very different,” when a true antithesis would be a clean mirror.
組成Borrowed from Latin antithesis, from Ancient Greek antíthesis. By surface analysis, anti- (“against”) + thesis (“a placing”).
