An antiparticle is a very small piece of an atom’s world that is the opposite twin of another tiny piece. The matching pair have opposite electric charge. The electron, which is negative, has an antiparticle called the positron, which is positive. If a particle and its antiparticle meet, they wipe each other out and leave energy. This is lab and physics-class language, not kitchen language. Antiparticles are the building pieces of antimatter: antimatter is what you would have if you gathered many of them. You will see the word in science news when people talk about space, big machines that smash particles, or medical scans that use positrons. Films sometimes mix it up with an antimatter bomb. The careful word for one single opposite twin is antiparticle; antimatter is the stuff made of them.
