The belief, movement, or policy of keeping priests and the church from political power. If anticlerical is the describing word — and sometimes the person — anticlericalism is the -: the stance itself. Historians use it for campaigns to take schools, marriage law, or property out of church hands, or to stop bishops sitting in government. Same careful, register as anticlerical. Though actually, again, it is about political influence, not a simple “I don’t go to church.”
