Describes people, parties, newspapers, or laws that do not want priests — the clergy — to hold political power or to steer the government. The fight is about the church as a power in the state: land, schools, courts, who writes the rules. Though actually, it is not the same as atheism, and not even the same as disliking religion. A believer can be anticlerical if they think priests should stay out of parliament. You meet it most in history: nineteenth-century France, Spain, Mexico, and other places where church and government were tightly mixed. It is a formal, political word, not playground English.
