1. 1

Ankara is the capital city of Turkey. It stands on high, dry land in the middle of the country, not by the sea. Istanbul is larger and better known, so often think Istanbul is the capital; the government moved to Ankara in the 1920s. Older English called the city Angora, and that name is still in “Angora cat”, “Angora goat” and “Angora wool”, which come from this area. Say it with the weight on the first part: ANG-kuh-ruh.

組成From Turkish Ankara. The Greek name Ánkura meant “anchor” or “hook”, for a bend in the river; it probably also echoes an older local name (Hittite Ankuwa), from a root meaning a bend or elbow.
