An angler is someone who catches fish as a sport or a hobby, almost always with a rod and a line, not with a net. The word sits on the fun side of fishing: a person who sells the catch is usually a or fisher, not an angler. You will meet it on club signs, in British newspapers, and in quiet morning talk by a river. It sounds a little more polite and old-fashioned than 'someone who goes fishing', but it is not fancy. Do not mix it with the school word angle (a corner), and do not mix it with the anglerfish — that fish is named because it hunts as if it were fishing, but this entry is the person.
組成angle (an old word for a fish-hook, and the verb 'to fish with a hook') + -er (a person who does that).
