Angling is the sport of catching fish with a fishing rod, a line, and a hook. It is the activity; the person is an . In careful British English, angling usually means rod-and-line fishing, not nets, spears, or catching fish to sell. Club names and riverside signs still love this word, though many people just say fishing. It is a little more formal and old-fashioned than fishing, but it is everyday in that sport.
