This is the usual American spelling of anaesthesia. It is the state of feeling no pain, or very little — and also the medical process of putting someone into that state with drugs or gas, so a doctor can operate. The older sense is simply “no sensation”; the hospital sense (the state a drug induces) is newer. There is local anesthesia, which numbs one part of the body, and general anesthesia, which sends you fully to sleep. British English keeps the extra a: anaesthesia. You will see this spelling on American hospital forms and in American textbooks. Same idea, different letters.
