Amorphous means there is no definite shape, no clear outline, nothing tidy to hold onto. Wet clay, a cloud, a blob of jam: amorphous. Chemists use it more strictly: an amorphous solid has atoms that are not stacked in a regular crystal — window glass is the example. Then people stretch it, which is useful: an amorphous crowd (no organisation), an amorphous fear (you cannot name the shape of it), an amorphous job description (nobody knows where it starts or ends). “Shapeless” is the everyday cousin; amorphous is a step more formal and often adds “and hard to define,” not only “round-ish.” Though actually, almost everything has some shape if you look closely; we say amorphous when the shape does not help us.
組成From Ancient Greek ámorphos, “without form”: a- (“without”) + morphḗ (“form”) + English -ous. By surface analysis, a- + -morphous.
