An alumnus is a former student of a school, college, or university. In the old Latin pattern it names a man, or it is used as the singular when the writer is not stressing gender. The plural is alumni. The word feels formal and a bit Latin-classroom: universities, fundraising, and newspaper profiles like it; friends at a reunion often just say . It does not have to mean someone who finished a degree — a person who studied there and left can still be called an alumnus, though graduate is tighter if they did complete the course. The school is imagined as the place that “fed” you, which is why the Latin started as “foster child”.
