Altitude is how high an object or a place is above the sea. A mountain of high altitude sits far above the water; a plane also flies at a certain altitude. In geography, flying, and climbing this is the usual word. In everyday talk, height can do a lot of the same work. Though actually, we do not use altitude for how tall a person is — that is height. And high altitude is not only “up in the sky”: a city on a high plateau can have high altitude while you are standing on the street. The air is thinner there, which is why people talk about altitude sickness.
