From Ancient Greek ἄλφα, the first letter of the Greek alphabet, from Phoenician aleph.

You can hold it as the very first letter of the Greek alphabet, α — the one that comes at the head of the line. Because it stands first, it easily comes to mean 'the beginning', the starting point of a series.
