Gamma is the third letter of the Greek alphabet. In Greek it looks like Γ when it is big and γ when it is small, and people say it “GAM-uh.” Greek letters are used as names and labels in science and maths, so you will also hear gamma in longer names, like gamma rays — but those names start from this letter, the way “B” is just a letter until someone says “B vitamin.” In school, gamma is simply the third one, after alpha and beta. It is a learned word from Ancient Greek, at home in classrooms, not in the market. Though actually, English keeps the Greek name rather than turning it into an everyday letter like A, B, C.
