Algeria is a large country in northwest Africa, on the Mediterranean Sea. Morocco lies to the west, Tunisia and Libya to the east; the covers much of the south. The capital is , a port on the coast. Arabic and Berber languages are spoken there; French is still widely used from the years when France ruled the country. Most people live in the north, near the sea. Though actually the English name hides a small story: it comes from Arabic al-jazā'ir, 'the islands' — a few little islands that once sat off the harbour of . The name of the city spread to the whole country.
