Algiers is the capital of Algeria, a country in North Africa, and it is also that country's largest city. It is a port on the Mediterranean Sea: ships come in and out, and the city faces the water. People say Algiers for the city and Algeria for the country. The two words sound close on purpose — they really do come from the same name. The older Arabic name meant “the islands,” because several small islands once sat in the bay (they are gone now, built into the harbour). In English you usually say “in Algiers” for the city. Though actually, there is also a neighbourhood in New Orleans, in the United States, called Algiers; that is a different place, and its name story is not settled. This word, in the sense you need, is the North African capital.
組成From French Alger, from Arabic al-jazāʔir, “the islands,” plural of jazīra, “island,” for the small islands that once stood in the Bay of Algiers.
