You can picture an adverb as a word that stands beside another word and adjusts it — it tells you how, when, where, or how much. 'He ran' becomes 'He ran slowly'; 'hot' becomes 'very hot'. The adverb never carries the main action or the main thing; it turns the dial on something already there.
