You can picture the engine word of a sentence — the one that says what is going on. Take it out and the sentence stops moving: 'Mei ___ the door' is not a sentence yet. Sometimes the engine is an action (run, open), sometimes it is just a state or something that happens (be, seem, happen), but it is always the word that puts the sentence into gear.
