Adultery is sex between a married person and someone who is not their wife or husband. It is the name of the act, and it feels formal and serious. In some places it has been a matter for the law as well as for the family; in others it is only a reason a court may end a marriage. In everyday talk, people more often say an affair, cheating, or being . Though actually, speakers are not always tidy: some use adultery for any sex outside a couple, married or not. The word looks a little like adult, but it does not come from adult and does not mean “sex between grown-ups”.

組成From Old French adultere, a learned borrowing from Latin adulterium (from the verb adulterō), with a change of ending. It replaced an older English form that had come through everyday Old French (avouterie). Not related to adult.
