An acupuncturist is the person who gives — the one who places the thin needles in chosen points on the body. The treatment is ; the worker is the acupuncturist. It is a job title, like dentist or physiotherapist: you see it on a clinic door, a name card, and in the sentence “I’m seeing my acupuncturist.” In English-speaking countries it often names a specialist whose main work is this treatment. Though actually, in Taiwan the same needles are very often put in by a 中醫師, a doctor of Chinese medicine, who may also use herbs and other methods. English still uses acupuncturist for the role. You would not call the treatment itself “an acupuncturist,” and you would not call a massage therapist this name just because they press the same points.
