Acupuncture is a treatment from Chinese medicine: a trained person puts very thin needles into chosen points on the body to help with pain or other problems. In English, acupuncture names the needle part. People have it for a sore back, headaches, or stress, and some hospitals offer it next to ordinary medicine. The word is ordinary in health talk — not slang, not a joke — though speakers argue about how far it can help. Though actually, the Chinese name 針灸 covers needles and also 灸, the warming of points with burning mugwort. English usually calls that second part moxibustion, and many patients never meet it. So a Taiwanese student who hears acupuncture should picture the needles, not the whole 針灸 kit. People also say “get acupuncture” or “have acupuncture”; using it as a verb (“to acupuncture someone”) exists but sounds a bit stiff. First used in English in 1684, as a learned borrowing, not as street talk.
