Academia is the world of universities and colleges: the teaching, the research, the papers, and the people who do that work. If someone works in academia, they belong to that world — a professor, a researcher, a graduate student — not to a company office or a hospital. People also use it for the culture of that world: slow hiring, journals, conferences, long years of study. It can sound proud, or a little cool and separate from ordinary life. It is a grown-up word, not slang and not stiff. It is uncountable: we say in academia, never an academia.

組成From Akademos, a hero of old Athens. A grove on land linked with him, the Akademeia, is where Plato taught. Latin took that as academia; English later used academia for the whole world of universities, not one school. Doublet of academy and academe.
