Academe is a slightly fancy, often smiling word for the world of universities — the teaching, the writing, the arguing, the slow life of books. People say “the groves of academe” as a set phrase, a little joke about how separate and leafy that world can feel. You would not normally write “I work in academe” on a form; you would say university or academia. Academe is the poetic twin: same family as academy, but used when the speaker wants a raised . Though actually, the name starts with a garden near Athens where taught, said to have belonged to a man called Akademos — so the “grove” in the phrase is not only a picture. With a capital A, Academe in older poetry can still mean that garden itself. Humorous or literary; not the everyday word.
