Zululand is a place name: the area in the northeast of South Africa that has been the home of the Zulu people for a long time. It sits near the Indian Ocean coast, north of the city of Durban. Today it is not a separate country or an official province with that name — it is part of the province called KwaZulu-Natal — so when people say Zululand they usually mean the traditional region, the land of the Zulu, rather than a line drawn on a modern map. You will meet the word in three kinds of writing. In history books it means the Zulu kingdom of the 1800s, the one ruled by kings like Shaka and Cetshwayo, and later the British colony after the war of 1879. In travel writing it means the rural, hilly part of KwaZulu-Natal, sold to tourists as a place of game parks, Zulu culture and craft markets. And in ordinary South African speech people still say it loosely, the way an American might say 'the Midwest' — everyone knows roughly where it is, but nobody can tell you the exact edge. The word is a proper noun, so it takes a capital Z and no 'the' before it: you go to Zululand, not to the Zululand. Note that Zulu on its own is much more common than Zululand, because Zulu is also the name of the people and of the language, which about twelve million people speak.
