Finland is a country in northern Europe, sitting between Sweden and Russia, with sea to the south. It is in the EU. The capital is . About five million people live there. People from Finland are Finns; the language is Finnish — and though actually Finnish is not close to Swedish or Russian; it belongs to a different language family, which surprises a lot of students. In the UK, people often connect Finland with , and with summer in the far north when the sun can still be seen at midnight (the midnight sun). Winters are long and dark in the north, which is the other side of that same fact. Use Finland for the country, Finnish for the language and the adjective (Finnish design, Finnish forests), Finn for a person.
組成From Old Norse Finnland: Finn + land, “the land of the Finns.” Land here means a country, as it does in Ireland or Poland.
