Zambian is the word for anything or anyone belonging to Zambia, the country in south-central Africa whose capital is Lusaka. It works two ways, and English learners need both. As an adjective it goes in front of a noun: Zambian food, the Zambian government, a Zambian passport, the Zambian border. As a noun it means a person from that country: "She's a Zambian", "three Zambians were on the team". Notice that the noun can be counted and made plural — Zambians — which is not true of every country word in English. Two spelling and sound points. It always takes a capital Z, like every word made from a country name; students who forget this in an essay lose an easy mark. And it is said zam-BEE-un, with the stress in the middle. This word follows a very regular pattern in English: take the country, add -an. Zambia gives Zambian, Kenya gives Kenyan, America gives American. But do not trust the pattern too far — English is untidy about these words. Some countries add -ian (Egypt, Egyptian), some add -ese (China, Chinese), some add -ish (Sweden, Swedish), and a few are completely their own (France, French). Each one has to be learned.
