Kenyan is the word for a person from Kenya, and for things that belong to that country — Kenyan coffee, Kenyan law, a Kenyan film. Kenya itself is a country in East Africa. It was under British rule, then became independent in 1963, and it is still in the Commonwealth, the loose family of countries with old ties to Britain. The capital is Nairobi. The country is famous abroad for coffee and tea, and for safari parks, where visitors come to see lions, elephants, giraffes and other wild animals. Though actually, most Kenyans do not live among those animals: they live in cities, towns and farms, like people anywhere. After the 2007 presidential election there was serious fighting, because people did not agree that the result was fair — that is part of the country's recent history, not a postcard. When a student sees Kenyan, the job of the word is to point at that place or those people, not to be the place-name itself.
