Yonder means 'over there' — and it points at something you can actually see, usually not very close but not far away either. Old English had a small set of these pointing words: here (near me), there (near you), yonder (that one, further off, over that way). You use it while your hand or your eyes move: 'The house is yonder, past the trees.' It works two ways. As an adverb it means over there: 'He lives yonder.' As an adjective it goes before a noun and means 'that one over there': 'yonder hill', 'yonder window'. You may also meet the noun phrase 'the wide blue yonder', meaning the far distance, the open sky — that one is still alive in normal English. Here is the honest part: yonder is not a word you should put in your own everyday English. In most of Britain and in most of the US it sounds old — it belongs to Shakespeare, to the Bible, to old songs. But it is not dead. In the southern and mountain parts of the United States, plenty of people say it naturally today: 'It's over yonder.' So when you meet it, ask which one it is — an old book, or a real speaker from a place where it lives.
