In everyday English, a yogi is someone who knows yoga deeply and usually teaches it — the person at the front of the class who has for many years. But the word is older and larger than that. In India, a yogi is a person who follows yoga as a spiritual path: someone who trains the body and the mind for years to reach a calm, clear state, sometimes living apart from ordinary life. So the word can point to a fitness teacher in a city studio or to a holy man in the mountains, and only the sentence tells you which. English speakers also use it a little for anyone who seems unusually calm and wise. The plural is yogis. A woman may be called a yogi, though the form yogini also exists for a woman. Be careful of one thing: many people in Taiwan first meet this word as the name of a cartoon bear, Yogi Bear, which has nothing to do with yoga.

From Hindi योगी, from Sanskrit योगिन्, from the root yuj 'to connect'.

組成From Hindi yogī, from Sanskrit yogin. Underneath is the root yuj, meaning "to join, to yoke together" — the same idea inside the word yoga, which is about joining body and mind. That root goes all the way back to a very old ancestor word that also gave English yoke.
