    A yoke is a wooden bar or frame put across the necks of two farm animals, usually oxen, so they can pull a cart or plow together as a team. This is a very old farming tool. Because a yoke ties animals together and makes them work hard, people also use "yoke" for something that controls or limits a person - "the yoke of oppression" means being controlled and treated by someone in power, like animals under the yoke.
