Yachting is the activity of sailing a yacht — going out on the water in one, for pleasure or in a race. It is an uncountable noun for the activity as a whole (yachting is expensive; she took up yachting), and it also works in front of other nouns: a yachting holiday, a yachting club, a yachting magazine, yachting shoes. It can also simply be the -ing form of the verb yacht (we spent the summer yachting round the islands), though the verb itself is much rarer than the noun. The word carries a flavour that sailing does not. A yacht is a boat kept for pleasure rather than work, and the bigger ones cost a great deal, so yachting sounds well-off — the world of clubs, blazers and expensive marinas. People who sail small boats for fun often avoid the word and just say sailing. In competition, the sport itself is officially called sailing now (that is what the Olympic event is called; it was from yachting in 2000), so yachting sounds slightly old-fashioned in sporting contexts. Note the spelling: the ch is silent, and yacht is said "yot", so yachting is "YOT-ing". The odd spelling comes from Dutch, where these fast boats were first built.
