WY is the two-letter postal abbreviation for Wyoming, a state in the western United States — a big, high, empty place of mountains and , with fewer people living in it than any other American state. The abbreviation belongs to addresses and forms: you write it after the city, as in 'Cheyenne, WY 82001'. It also turns up in tables, weather maps, sports results and licence plates. Speaking, you never say 'W-Y'; you say 'Wyoming'. The letters are always capitals with no full stops, which is how the US Postal Service standardised every state code in 1963 — WA is Washington, WI is Wisconsin, WV is West Virginia, and WY is Wyoming. That cluster of W states is easy to , so when you are filling in a form it is worth reading the code twice.
