A state in the western United States, up in the Rocky Mountains. It is big — bigger than the whole island of Britain — but almost empty: fewer people live in the entire state than in one district of a large Asian city, and it has the smallest population of any American state. That mix of huge land and few people is the thing to remember about it. It is high, dry, cold in winter, and famous for wide open grassland, mountains, and wind. Money there comes out of the ground and off the grass: coal, oil, natural gas, and other minerals, plus cattle for beef and sheep for wool. Yellowstone, the world's first national park, sits mostly inside Wyoming, so many people know the place from photographs without knowing its name. In American speech, Wyoming carries the feeling of "cowboy country" — the state even puts a man riding a bucking horse on its car plates. One small piece of history students often like: Wyoming was the first place in the United States to let women vote, in 1869, long before the rest of the country, which is why it is nicknamed the Equality State.
